EXTINCTION: PART 1 // THE JAMES BLACK GALLERY // VANCOUVER BC // 7/20/2019
2 4-track sound-on-sound tape loops, effects pedals, contact microphone, live sound looping and video projection.
“Extinction: Part 1” was a performance art piece immediately erased. Taking writing from the audience, the spoken word was made up of memories based in nature, collected before the performance. Video projected behind the performance was a continuous list of extinct animals from 1900-2019, separated by the country which reported them extinct. Following the performance the writing was recycled and the tape loops were erased, only pictures remain.
The temporary nature of the performance, the contrast of personal, often happy, memories and the stark projection of extinct animal names created a visceral and tense dichotomy.
